Don’t get needled -just sock it to ’em!

-

SeeInG Tom Daley knitting reminded me of our junior school lessons. The class of 30 girls and boys were taught to knit, and when everyone had mastered the basics, we went on to using four needles. It was tricky for ten-year-olds, but we conquered it thanks to our wonderful teacher, Mrs Markham. She then gave us each a ball of maroon wool and said we were going to knit socks for servicemen. We knitted one sock each, the teacher turned the heel, then gave us our sock back to finish. They were paired up and sent off. There may have been some strange pairs, but generally they looked OK, and we were proud of ourselves. I wonder if any of my old school friends from 1950 at clarkson Street School in the east end of london still knit? I do!
