It’s time to run out woke from cricket!

-

IT IS with increasing frustration that I have to deal with all things woke. The latest is that cricket batsmen are to be called batters to appease the increased number of women players, who I’m sure are not worried one way or the other. Apart from sport, I love music, so hope the politically correct brigade will not try to change some of the old songs. If they did, the Glen Campbell classic Wichita Lineman would become Wichita Lineperson, Son Of A Preacher Man would become Offspring Of A Person and the name of the group Brotherhood Of Man would cause a meltdown.

RICHARD OWEN, Swansea. IN CRICKET, the person who bowls is never called a bowlsman and the fielder is not dubbed a fieldsman, so why should the person who bats be a batsman? Batter is fine by me.

JEFF ROBERTS, Bridgend, S Wales. I CAN’T get too excited about whether a person batting is referred to as a batsman or batter. However, I am surprised that woman cricketer Alex Hartley makes the feeble argument that if changing the word from batsman to batter makes one person feel more comfortable, then it’s worthwhile. To turn it on its head, you could say that if lots of people are made to feel uncomfortable by the change, then it must be the case that the alteration is not worthwhile. Or is it a case of the majority need to adjust while the minority get their way?

DES MORGAN, Swindon, Wilts. THE idiots who are changing batsman to batter are batty!

A. WOOD, Dover, Kent. ISN’T batter what you use to make pancakes and Yorkshire puddings? What on earth will Sir Geoffrey Boycott think?

ANGUS LONG, Newcastle upon Tyne. BATTER belongs in a fish-and-chip shop, not on a cricket pitch. DAVID WILLEY, Nuthall, Notts. WHO will be the first batter to have his or her chips? RICHARD COLE, Woking, Surrey. IF BATSMAN is being changed to batter, shouldn’t Lord’s Cricket Ground be renamed Lords & Ladies? M. WILLIAMS, Newtown, Powys.
