Spills of shame
GRIFF RHYS JONES has performed an invaluable public service by drawing attention to the poisoning of our water courses through human waste and slurry from intensive farming (Mail).
In 2020, there were 336 spills of untreated sewage discharged into the River Loughor over 309 days from Garnswllt Waste Water Treatment Plant operated by Welsh Water. Yet under the guidance and permit issued, this does not merit any enforcement action. GARETH WARDELL,
Llanelli, Carms. FARMING friends have told me the problem of slurry waste has increased since milk quotas were abolished.
Bigger dairy herds kept permanently inside are producing huge amounts of slurry. They are milked up to three times a day and four cuts of silage need to be produced to feed them.
It’s unsustainable and has had disastrous effects on watercourses and rivers.
