Super League rebels escape punishment

- By DAVID KENT

A COuRt action has forced uEFA to abandon their bid to ban Super league rebels barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid from the Champions league.

the six Premier league teams involved in the proposed breakaway last April — Arsenal, Chelsea, liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester united and tottenham — quickly pulled out amid a fierce backlash from their supporters and the Government.

but Real, barcelona and Juve continued to back it.

A Spanish injunction in June led to uEFA pausing their disciplinary case against the three clubs. And a renewed demand last week from a Madrid judge for uEFA to comply with the ruling not to sanction the clubs led to the case being scrapped last night.

In a statement, uEFA said: ‘Following the stay of proceedings against barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid, in the matter related to a potential violation of uEFA’s legal framework in connection with the so-called Super league, the uEFA Appeals body has declared today the proceedings null and void, as if the proceedings had never been opened.’

It is understood uEFA would restart their legal case should any attempts to reignite the Super league arise.

the nine clubs who pulled out of the Super league — the six from the Premier league plus Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and Inter Milan — agreed on a settlement deal with uEFA which would see them forfeit five per cent of their prize money from a season in European competition and pay a combined ¤15million as a ‘gesture of goodwill’ to benefit children, youth and grassroots football. No cash will now be handed over.
