Starmer’s told to turn left... and it’s a bit of a car crash

- By John Stevens

DURING his Labour leadership he has faced complaints about his direction, with some urging him to go further Left.

So things may have felt familiar for Sir Keir Starmer yesterday as he tried to reverse a lorry at an HGV training centre near Oldham.

After an instructor told him: ‘More to the left,’ Sir Keir complained that he could ‘not quite see that mirror any more’ – before a loud crash was heard as he drove straight into some metal barriers.

‘You’d have failed your test,’ the instructor told him, to which Sir Keir replied: ‘Very good, very good.’

Afterwards, the former lawyer conceded that he would not be climbing in a cab to solve the HGV driver shortage. ‘Well, it’s a big beast, is the lorry, but it was really interesting to drive it,’ he told reporters. ‘I’m not sure that I’ll be driving to Tesco later on this afternoon to do the deliveries.’ During the visit, Sir Keir pledged that Labour would improve pay and conditions for HGV drivers to prevent future shortages.

He argued that No10 should have prepared a long-term strategy ‘years ago’.
