ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ, 32 (right). The politician, at 29, became the youngest woman to serve in the U.S. congress. a day before she was sworn in, footage of her dancing as a student was shared online in an attempt to embarrass her. She reacted by filming herself dancing outside her new office and wrote: ‘i hear the [republican party] thinks women dancing are scandalous. Wait till they find out congresswo­men dance too!’

PAUL SIMON, 80. The U.S. singersong­writer and actor formed his first duo with school friend art Garfunkel in the mid-50s, as Tom and Jerry. Simon, who retired from touring in 2018, has released 13 solo albums, won 16 Grammys and sold more than 100 million records.

BORN ON THIS DAY

LENNY BRUCE (1925-66). The U.S. comedian was named by rolling Stone as the third greatest stand-up of all time (behind George carlin and richard pryor). The magazine said he ‘singlehand­edly transforme­d stand-up into an outlaw occupation’. He died from an overdose of morphine while waiting to appeal against a conviction for obscenity.

LILLIE LANGTRY (1853-1929). The actress from the channel islands was born emilie charlotte le Breton but was known as the Jersey lily, and one of the most beautiful women of her time. She inspired oscar Wilde to write an ode, The new Helen, and was painted by pre-raphaelite artists John everett Millais and edward Burne-Jones.
