Trouble erupts in Tirana, too

- GEORGE BOND

POLAND players were pelted with bottles by Albania supporters as their Group I match was halted for 20 minutes by crowd trouble in Tirana.

Substitute Karol Swiderski scored the only goal as Poland secured a crucial victory to keep the pressure on England for an automatic qualifying place.

And as Swiderski ran over to celebrate in front of the Albania fans, objects rained down from the stands, forcing the Polish team to run for cover.

Poland captain Kamil Glik remonstrated with the home support, while Robert Lewandowski was seen throwing his hands up in disgust as the visitors left the pitch and returned to their dressing room.

The match was then suspended while the Albania players urged their supporters to calm down and removed the bottles from the pitch.

After the lengthy delay, Poland held on for victory to leapfrog their opponents in the table and leave them just three points behind England with two matches remaining.

The group winners qualify for next year’s World Cup in Qatar automatically, while the runners-up face a two-legged play-off in March.
