Javid: Don’t can our New Year fireworks, Khan

-

COVID should not be used as an excuse for cancelling London’s famous New Year’s Eve fireworks display, Sajid Javid said yesterday.

The Health Secretary urged London mayor Sadiq Khan to reconsider his decision to axe the display, saying he was sure there was a ‘perfectly safe way’ it could take place.

Mr Khan was branded a killjoy this week when he announced he was scrapping the celebration because of ‘uncertainty caused by Covid’. The display, which draws crowds of 100,000, was replaced by a secret light show last year.

But Mr Javid dismissed the reasoning, telling LBC’s Nick Ferrari: ‘I can’t understand why the fireworks can’t happen.

‘But that’s not a decision for the Government... it’s the mayor’s firework display, so I hope he can reconsider it.’

A spokesman for the mayor said plans were in place for an alternative event.
