ARMY 2021... OR JOE 90?

Sci-fi glasses like ’60s puppet show

- By John Abiona

AS a nine-year-old superspy, Joe 90 sported a pair of hightech specs that transmitted expert knowledge into his mind – allowing him to escape from all sorts of peril.

Now the British Army seems to be taking inspiration from the 1960s sci-fi puppet show, the brainchild of Thunderbirds creators Gerry and Sylvia Anderson.

The Ministry of Defence is trialling glasses which have a virtual behaviour monitoring system that tracks soldiers’ eyes – and sees whether they are fatigued, disorientated or stressed.

The Exo Insight goggles, demonstrated in Salisbury, Wiltshire, are part of the Army Warfighting Experiment programme, which aims to harness technology for complex future wars.
