Boy of 14 in court over five-year-old’s murder
Victim’s mother and her partner are also charged
A BOY of 14 charged with the murder of a five-year-old appeared in court yesterday.
The body of Logan Mwangi, also known as Logan Williamson, was discovered in the River Ogmore on July 31.
The teenage defendant, from Sarn, a village three miles north of Bridgend, appeared in front of District Judge Stephen Harmes at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court.
The boy – who cannot be named because of his age – spoke only to confirm his name, age and address. He had previously appeared at Newport Crown Court on August 14, charged with perverting the course of justice.
Judge Harmes told him: ‘You face serious charges and they have to be sent to crown court.’
Logan’s mother Angharad Williamson, 30, also of Sarn, has previously appeared in court charged with perverting the course of justice. She was charged with murder last night and is due to appear in Cardiff Magistrates’ Court today.
Her partner, 39-year-old John Cole, has also previously appeared in court charged with Logan’s murder and perverting the course of justice.
A provisional crown court trial date of January 31 has been set. The teenager – who was 13 at the time of the Newport Crown Court hearing – was remanded into care of the local authority.
Logan was found dead after police were called to reports of a missing child at 5.45am.
Tributes paid by family and friends remembered Logan as a ‘kind, funny, polite, handsome and clever’ boy. An inquest opening in Pontypridd heard Logan was discovered in the River Ogmore in Sarn on July 31.
Coroner’s officer Lauren Howitt said Logan had been formally identified by his grandmother Claire Williamson.
Miss Howitt told the hearing that a post-mortem examination had been carried out but further investigation was needed before a cause of death could be announced.
The South Wales Police major crime investigation team is carrying out continuing inquiries.
