Trans activists try to cancel Tunnock’s teacakes

- By John Abiona

THE Tunnock’s teacakes bakery became the latest victim of cancel culture yesterday after it donated treats to a group accused of transphobia.

There were calls to boycott the beloved family-run Scottish business after it donated a batch of its marshmallow-filled chocolate teacakes to LGB Alliance for its inaugural conference. The alliance promotes the rights of lesbians, bisexuals and gay men and supports women who believe it is impossible to change biological sex. It has been accused of being anti-trans.

The teacake war was sparked after LGB Alliance thanked Tunnock’s on Twitter for donating ‘generous quantities’ of caramel wafers and teacakes for its event at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in central London. The alliance added: ‘Both were gulped down by a hungry LGB crowd and lovely straight and trans allies.’

Soon after there were calls from some trans rights activists to boycott Tunnock’s. Teacher Vic Symonds said the alliance ‘attack and undermine trans people and wrecked my favourite biscuit’. But India Willoughby, Britain’s first transgender national TV newsreader, said: ‘Have it on good authority that the lovely Tunnock’s had no idea who the LGB Alliance even were when they supplied freebies. Thought they were supporting LGBT. Cut them some slack.’

Tunnock’s did not respond to request for comment.
