CRITICISM of the new cap on social care is that it will disproportionately hit those in lower-cost housing areas.

Have owners of homes in more expensive areas all won the lottery? Did their houses fall into their laps?

No, they had to find huge deposits, pay far higher mortgages and for decades spend a much higher proportion of their income on keeping a roof over their families’ heads. Yes, their property is worth more, but they have paid for it, believe me.

ALAN SIBBET, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. IF THE difference on house prices is so wide between the North and South, why have a price cap of £86,000? Making it 50 per cent would be fair, levelling up the country.

Mrs T. NEWMAN, Gloucester. IT WOULD be fairer to base the contribution to social care costs on a percentage of assets. Thus those with less would not contribute all of their assets towards care, but would contribute the same percentage of their assets as a wealthy person.
