Silly Billy! Joel claims Taylor Swift is as good as The Beatles

THEY have both notched up countless hits and sold tens of millions of records worldwide.

Most music-lovers, however, would probably stop there when it came to comparing The Beatles and Taylor Swift.

But not singer-songwriter Billy Joel, who has hailed the American pop queen as ‘this generation’s Beatles’.

He said her music, such as the huge hit Shake It Off, will endure – just like the songs crafted by the Fab Four decades ago.

When asked about current artists, he told

‘She knows music and she knows how to write’

the newspaper USA Today: ‘Taylor [Swift] is a very talented girl and she’s productive and keeps coming up with great concepts and songs and she’s huge.

‘You have to give her high marks. She knows music and she knows how to write. She’s like that generation’s Beatles.’

Miss Swift is only 32 but has already released 11 studio albums, sold more than 100million records worldwide and won 11 Grammy Awards.

Despite her success, the singer still has a way to go before matching The Beatles. Their worldwide sales have soared past 600million, despite the band splitting up in 1972, and they produced 13 studio albums plus also won 11 Grammys. Miss Swift is fighting a legal battle after being accused of stealing lyrics included in Shake it Off from the song Playas Gon’ Play by US girl group 3LW.

Both feature the lines ‘players gonna play’ and ‘haters gonna hate’. Earlier this week she appealed against a decision by a judge in California to allow a trial to go ahead when her lawyers argued the words were ‘free for everyone to use’.
