Always drop the dog lead

If confronted by a herd of cows don’t act aggressively or try to scare them by shouting and waving your arms.

Move away as carefully and quietly as possible.

If with a dog the cows may see this as a danger to their calves. Let go of the dog’s lead – it will be able to outrun the cows.

Stay calm and the cows should realise you pose no threat. Do not make eye contact if they look aggressive – and don’t run.

Avoid walking through a field of cows with calves if possible.
