Dog walkers warned to avoid beaches
VETS have been ‘inundated’ with dogs who have fallen seriously ill after going for walks on beaches.
That has led veterinary nurse Brogan Proud, who runs Yorkshire Coast Pet Care, to post a warning on Facebook not to take dogs along the coast ‘for the foreseeable future’.
Hundreds on social media have reported similar incidents over a 110-mile stretch of coastline from Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, down through Yorkshire towards Hull. It follows the death of Great dane odin who developed a lung infection his owners believe was caused by swimming in ‘polluted’ seawater near Portsmouth.
Now one victim, ashley Brown-Bolton, said her nine-month-old beagle spaniel Copper had come down with a bug, which caused severe vomiting and diarrhoea, after a family trip to Fraisthorpe Beach, East Yorkshire. She added: ‘We thought he was on the mend but last night he was sick again. We’re probably going to end up back at the vets.’
another, ambulance worker Jo owen – whose German shepherds oscar and Chester became unwell after walks along the coast at Redcar – said ‘it can only be the beach’ where they caught the bug.
local authorities said they have identified no causes linked to the coast.
