Teacher, 23, killed on afternoon run
THE murder of an Irish primary school teacher as she went for an afternoon jog has sparked an outcry over violence against women.
Ashling Murphy, 23, right, was set upon in an apparently random attack as she ran alongside a canal around 4pm on Wednesday.
The route in Cappincur, County Offaly, is known as Fiona’s Way after a woman whose disappearance 25 years ago is still unsolved.
Police are questioning a 40-year-old suspect said to be a Romanian man living in the area.
Miss Murphy worked at Durrow National School in Tullamore. Garda police superintendent Eamonn Curley pledged ‘no stone will be left unturned’ in bringing her killer to justice.
‘At this stage, there is no information that the victim and her killer were known to each other,’ he said yesterday. A vigil for all victims of violence against women is planned outside the parliament in Dublin today.
