THERE are mitigating circumstances and one is the total lack of preparation. I go back to a function I did with Graham Gooch before the series and he said: ‘I fear we’re going to get hammered. You can’t just turn up in Australia and play.’ There are reasons for the lack of warm-up games and Covid is one of them. But England were just woefully under-prepared.
