Martinez in Everton frame

- By DOMINIC KING Northern Football Correspondent

ROBERTO MARTINEZ is being considered for a shock return to Everton after Rafa Benitez yesterday became the sixth manager to be sacked by Farhad Moshiri, just 200 days into his reign. Benitez was effectively relieved of his duties on Saturday night after a disastrous 2-1 defeat at Norwich that left them on the brink of a relegation battle. The club confirmed his departure yesterday in a terse 40-word statement. Everton are already in talks with Belgium over their head coach Martinez, who was in charge at Goodison Park from 2013-2016. He has a £2million release clause in his Belgium contract, which expires after the World Cup in December. It would be a dramatic appointment, as Martinez was the first of five managers Moshiri sacked. It was initially proposed that the 48-year-old could take the job on an interim basis but he is eager for the role to be permanent.
