I’m a wallaby, get me out of here: ‘Ant’ hops it from zoo

- By Andy Dolan

A WALLABY named Ant has dodged RSPCA staff for a third time after escaping from a petting zoo nearly two weeks ago.

The Bennett’s wallaby has been spotted numerous times in fields and woodland since his escape in the early hours of January 5.

Meanwhile Dec, a fellow wallaby at the Tiny Steps Petting Farm in Thurlby, Lincolnshire, ‘doesn’t seem to be upset at all’ at Ant’s absence according to owner Tracey Hall. Miss Hall said Dec, the ‘more cautious’ of the pair, is ‘quite happy’.

Seven-month-old joey Ant was found inside a caged feeding station on Saturday morning. But the cage was designed for dogs and foxes and Ant managed to burst free.

‘The metal grille door was almost bent double,’ Miss Hall said. ‘As you can imagine, there isn’t too much call in the UK for a wallaby trap.’

Tiny Steps staff remain baffled as to how Ant managed to escape in the first place and asked people to message the farm if they spot him rather than try and catch him.

Bennett’s wallabies are native to Australia’s east coast and Tasmania. Ant and Dec were born in the UK.
