Cold comforts

-

I ALSO remember the time when freezing bedrooms and extra layers of clothing were the winter norm (Letters). They brought their joys as well. Stoneware hot water bottles had to be well wrapped up to avoid being scalded. We used the clothes we’d wear the next day, so they would be warm when we dressed.

We liked to put a penny in the folds to warm it sufficiently by morning to melt circles in the window frost.

I was entranced they would quickly freeze over again in a different Jack Frost pattern. CAROLA MORTON,

Hereford.
