THEY didn’t part on the best of terms 35 years ago and ever since the relationship between Morrissey and Johnny Marr, his former bandmate in the Smiths, has been rather chilly.

Now Morrissey, 62, has pleaded with guitarist Marr to stop mentioning his name in interviews.

In an open letter on his website, the singer accuses his former bandmate of making ‘cruel and savage’ remarks about him.

He wrote: ‘Would you please, instead, discuss your own career… If you can, would you please just leave me out of it?’ He added: ‘We haven’t known each other for 35 years – which is many lifetimes ago. Must you persistently, year after year, decade after decade, blame me for everything…

‘We all know that the press will print anything you say about me as long as it’s cruel and savage.’

He finished: ‘Just stop using my name as click-bait… Please stop. It is 2022, not 1982.’ Marr, 58, responded on Twitter, mocking Morrissey’s use of an open letter which ‘hasn’t really been a thing since 1953’.

He may have upset Morrissey with a comment in the latest issue of Uncut magazine. He said: ‘I’m really close with everyone I’ve worked with – except for the obvious one.

‘And that isn’t that much of a surprise because we’re so different, me and Morrissey.’

Morrissey has made a series of controversial remarks on race. In 2019, he shared a video accusing the establishment of using rapper Stormzy to promote multiculturalism at the expense of British culture. He has expressed support for a far-Right party and called Hitler ‘Left-wing’.
