Blind Date

- Interviews: SAMANTHA BRICK

‘ If he’d reached over for a kiss, I wouldn’t ’ have said no to him

‘Things hit the skids because Kai is woke .’ and I am not . .

DATING PAST?

I HAVEN’T had much luck. My last long-term relationship ended during lockdown 2020 when he said: ‘I need my space.’ I can’t be doing with the small talk required on dating apps. I even asked my aunts to help find me a match, but nothing has come of it.

PRE-DATE NERVES?

Yes, but they were good nerves. Getting butterflies in my tummy means I’m excited. I had my nails done, so I was confident that at least my hands would look good.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS?

Before I arrived I realised, as I wondered whom he might be, that while a good match is about the person, I do care about looks, too. When I saw david, I was pleasantly surprised. He was good-looking and instantly charming.

EASY TO TALK TO?

I excused myself to pop to the loo within seconds of arriving. on my return, I joked I’d given myself a pep talk in the mirror. I was in fact reapplying my lippy. He thought it was funny and it broke the ice.

david was a gentleman, talking me through the menu and asking about my preferred wine. I didn’t want the date to end. He asked me to go for drinks with him at his members’ club afterwards.

EMBARRASSING MOMENTS?

No, But the date ended abruptly when we got into a complex debate. the conversation was third date material: our heritages and how we feel about our identity in Britain. I’m not the type of person to back down just to make someone else feel comfortable. We did leave together and david texted me when he got home.

DID SPARKS FLY?

Yes, there was a lot of chemistry. at the second venue, david sat beside me and at one point his hand brushed against my leg. I thought I’d got myself a great match.

If he’d reached over for a kiss I wouldn’t have said no.

SEE HIM AGAIN?

after our debate, I’m going to have to think about whether I’ll see him again — I might.

WHAT DO YOU THINK HE THOUGHT OF YOU?

He Made it clear he fancied me through his body language and the fact he sat next to me.

He made an effort to show me he liked me, which took away any awkwardness.

WOULD YOUR FRIENDS LIKE HIM?

Yes. david can talk to anyone. He’s funny — without being a clown.

DATING PAST?

I suffer from Peter Pan syndrome — I don’t want to grow up! I like clubbing and prefer to date women who are younger than me. I’ve had three loves in my life and I wanted to go all the way with one, but she wasn’t ready. I want to fall in love.

PRE-DATE NERVES?

Not remotely. I’m a serial dater and suspect I’m expert first-date material. I knew we’d have fun.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS?

I arrIved at the restaurant first. When Kai turned up, I offered her my cheek for a kiss, but she didn’t move. Within seconds, she dashed to the loo — she seemed nervous.

However, when she returned she cracked a joke about telling herself it was going to be oK. We laughed and I knew the date would be fine. I could tell Kai is cool and stylish.

EASY TO TALK TO?

Yes, I’d already gone through the menu so had ideas in mind of what we could order — if Kai was agreeable. We decided to share three starters and three mains. We went for fish and seafood options and a bottle of red.

We disagreed at one point about how women represent themselves on Instagram and I made a joke, pretending to make a call, saying: ‘Houston — we have a problem.’

the more we talked, the more attracted I was to Kai.

EMBARRASSING MOMENTS?

NoNe that I remember.

DID SPARKS FLY?

defINItelY. We were flirting and I found Kai sexy. In my mind, I’d hoped the evening would end with a kiss. I took her to my members’ club but from there, things hit the skids. that’s when we discovered Kai is woke and I am not. I like to debate, so I did challenge her on her views. that aside — we had a great time.

SEE HER AGAIN?

I HoPe so. We were both disappointed by how things ended, but I have messaged Kai since — we had already exchanged numbers.

WHAT DO YOU THINK SHE THOUGHT OF YOU?

tHat I’m fun, interesting and funny. she said that I’d met her standards. Kai is cute and very feminine, I still got strong signals that she liked me.

WOULD YOUR FRIENDS LIKE HER?

Yes, and I’d have no hesitation in introducing her to them.
