Inter wing-backs will trouble Klopp

- By CHRIS SUTTON

INTER MILAN are packed with talented players. There is Edin Dzeko, who is 35 years old now but still banging in the goals. Lautaro Martinez is a clever forward and was a great partner to Romelu Lukaku last season. They have Alexis Sanchez, who we know all about, and Ivan Perisic, who never stops running down that left wing. Denzel Dumfries (right) will look to stretch Liverpool down the other flank. We could go on and on. The good news for Liverpool is Nicolo Barella, the Italian who impressed us all in Roberto Mancini’s three-man midfield at Euro 2020, is suspended for both games. But still, this is a solid side they are about to face. Inter may end up being Serie A champions — they are currently second to AC Milan but with a game in hand — so this will not be a boxticking exercise for Jurgen Klopp’s men. Inter will field their usual 3-5-2 formation at the San Siro and Liverpool can have a little trouble when facing a back three. Chelsea have held them twice in the Premier League this season using that set-up, and Brentford and Tottenham have troubled Klopp’s side with back threes, too. Whether Inter are successful will largely depend on how their wing-backs play and what we usually see is them going from box to box relentlessly. It is going to be interesting to see how Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson handle that. They will have to be switched on throughout, always aware of their opponents. Though I expect a difficult encounter, I believe Liverpool will prevail. They have the power to see most of the ball over these two legs and can outscore the opposition with their forwards. That includes Luis Diaz, who was rested against Burnley and can be let loose on Inter.
