Should self-driving cars be allowed on roads?

-

THE Department for Transport has announced it will allow self-driving vehicles at speeds of up to 37 mph by the end of this year (Mail). I wouldn’t trust my life to a self-driving car at any speed. The most reliable control system is a pair of hands operated by a brain.

MAURICE BLIGH, Sittingbourne, Kent.

WILL self-driving cars be more aware of the highway Code than drivers by indicating their intentions when turning and at roundabouts? I have to mind-read drivers who ignore the common courtesy.

GEOFFREY NEWMARCH, Lincoln.

SMART motorways that rely on sophisticated cameras have turned out to be death traps, so what makes anyone think self-drive cars will be safe?

IAN HUTTON, Newton Abbot, Devon.

WHAT nonsense that it’s OK to watch TV when travelling at less than 37 mph in a self-driving car, but not to use a mobile phone because it would be distracting.

CHRIS SHARP, Leeds.

WHY waste money on developing technology to enable you to be able to watch TV while your car drives itself?

PATRICK HALLIWELL, Bridgend, S. Wales.

I WAS almost hit by an electric car because there was no sound of it approaching a blind corner. Give them a built-in rattle.

NICK CHAMBeRS, Bingley, W. Yorks.

I PITY motorists with all the latest electronic equipment on-board. The cost of repairs will be horrendous.

PETE WILLIAMS, Hayes, Middx.

WITH speed limiters to help improve road safety, how about making direction indicators standard on all cars? Though I fear some motorists would struggle to master their complexity.

DAVE KELLARD, Hoddesdon, Herts.
