Labour’s swipe at Mrs Rishi with pledge to ‘axe’ non-dom status

- By Political Editor

LABOUR tried to pile pressure on Rishi Sunak over his family finances yesterday with a pledge to end non-dom status.

It follows a backlash after it emerged the Chancellor’s heiress wife Akshata Murty had been registered as a non-dom for nine years.

It allowed Indian-born Miss Murty to pay UK taxes only on earnings in this country, while paying ‘international tax’ on her substantial foreign earnings. She has now agreed to pay UK tax on all her earnings. But Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves yesterday twisted the knife, announcing a Labour government would ‘abolish’ nondom status.

But the small print of a policy document suggested Labour, which has previously rejected the idea, would actually reform it by cutting the time new arrivals can claim the status from 15 years to five.
