University boss in genocide slur

-

THE rector of Edinburgh University has sparked a diplomatic row by claiming Rwanda’s president was behind his country’s genocide.

Debora Kayembe made the remark on Twitter when commenting on UK plans to send asylum seekers to the African nation. Her now-deleted tweet said Paul Kagame orchestrated the massacre of minority Tutsis in 1994.

However Mr Kagame is a Tutsi himself and led forces against the Hutu majority extremists perpetrating the genocide.

Miss Kayembe, who is a human rights lawyer, was accused of ‘twisting facts’ and the university was forced to apologise. Peter Mathieson, its principal, sent a letter to Rwanda’s UK high commissioner recognising ‘the hurt caused by the rector’s statements’.
