DNA JOURNEY, 9PM, ITV

-

JAYNE TORVILL and Christopher Dean (pictured) skated their way into the nation’s hearts to the strains of Ravel’s Bolero at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, earning near-perfect marks to take the gold medal for Great Britain. The pair have recently finished their latest stint as judges on Dancing On Ice, but it’s always wonderful to see them back together, and they are reunited once again here to investigate their family trees in the last of the latest series of ITV’s answer to Who Do You Think You Are?. It’s a profoundly moving journey for Chris, who is soon reliving some painful memories — we learn that his mother left when he was just six years old, and he was brought up by his dad and stepmum. He recalls ‘mum leaving with a suitcase, and two hours later Betty [his stepmum] arriving. Nobody spoke about it.’ But there’s a pleasant surprise in store for Chris as he discovers living relatives on his mother’s side he never knew existed — though he’ll have to venture a long way from his Nottingham roots to meet them — to Utah in the western United States. Jayne, meanwhile, finds some family connections much closer to home. She is also keen to solve a lifelong puzzle of where her sporting prowess comes from, and is delighted to uncover an astounding connection to West Ham football club.
