GASLIT, STARZPLAY

-

‘EVERYONE’S so evil here, I’m having so much fun!’ That’s the sentiment of one of the characters in this gripping eight-part drama exploring the Watergate scandal of the early 1970s, as she attends a party full

of scheming Republicans. And that’s a large part of the appeal of watching it, too — the villains are all wonderfully cartoonish but they are also definitely villains, so you get the fun of watching them mixed with sudden lurches into the reality of how terrible

it all was. Julia Roberts (pictured) shines at the head of the cast as the whistleblower Martha Mitchell; under a lot of make-up, Sean Penn plays her husband, President Nixon’s loyal Attorney General John N. Mitchell. There’s also Downton’s Dan Stevens as a White House lawyer who’s in over his head and, epitomising that cartoon villain balance, Boardwalk Empire’s Shea Wigham as G. Gordon Liddy — a passionate official who comes across as both ridiculous and deeply dangerous. New episodes follow every Sunday on the Starzplay streaming service.
