MARY PORTAS: ON STYLE, RADIO 4, 11.30AM

-

THERE are buttons and bows, frills and feathers, Bridgerton-style breeches, Calvin Klein undercrackers and a surprising, enormous ballgown in a new exhibition on the history of men’s fashion at the Victoria & Albert Museum. In this first of a four-part series, Mary Portas takes a look at the exhibits, which range from the 18th century to the present day. Mary (pictured) casts an informed eye over some fine examples of top-class, discreet, elegant tailoring, as well as some of the over-the-top stuff that chaps have strutted their stuff in over the centuries.

THE garage door slides open as Lynne Truss goes for a forage in search of the past, in an edition of ARCHIVE ON 4 (11AM, 9PM, RADIO 4 EXTRA) from 2009. She finds it in the form of cassette tapes from when she interviewed great playwrights, including Tom Stoppard and Arthur Miller, for literary publications. To a backdrop of clinking coffee cups and wine glasses, and jazz riffs, the playwrights share their wisdom while an awestruck Lynne giggles.
