Today’s poem
My clocks have all moved
forward, as have I. Hooray! It’s so much lighter
in the sky! Warmer days, stronger sun, We’ve had eggs, hot
cross buns. Flinging off my winter coat,
I shout: ‘Goodbye!’ I unearth my summer
clothes to give them a try. Oh dear. I’ve eaten far too
many pies. The increase to my waist Is a personal disgrace, Buttons ping off across the
room and I sigh. I fling on a chiffon blouse,
undeterred, And dance out into the
garden with the birds. The sky’s a baby
powder blue, As are my nose and
fingers, too, I’ve spring fever, yet I
shiver, it’s absurd. I tiptoe through my tulips,
one by one, Then I notice clouds are
blocking out the sun. Apple blossom and snow
are falling, In fact, the weather
is appalling, Being outside without a
coat, just isn’t fun. I make it back inside before
the sleet and hail, And the gale force wind
that’s just begun to wail. My summer clothes lie on
the floor, I put them back into
a drawer, Realisation and common
sense at last prevail. My chiffon blouse is soaked
I’m sad to say, I’ll have to dry it for
another day. I snuggle back into my vest
and sweater, Ahh! That’s warmer, so
much better. I’ll get out my summer togs
again in May. Anita Bass, Theydon Bois, Essex.
