FODEN: WE MUST TAKE CHANCES

- By JACK GAUGHAN at the Etihad Stadium

PHIL FODEN bemoaned a missed opportunity to kill Real Madrid’s ambitions of reaching the Champions League final. With just a one-goal lead, Manchester City have work to do at the Bernabeu next week if they are to compete in consecutive European finals. Foden, who scored City’s third of a barnstorming semi-final first leg, had a shot blocked at pointblank range by Dani Carvajal as Real hung on. ‘We started really well and could have killed them off. In these games, we need to take more chances,’ Foden said. ‘We are playing a side who have won the Champions League many times and if we give the ball away they are going to punish us. It is something we need to work on in the second leg. The tie is still on.’ Real were second best all night but two-goal Karim Benzema said: ‘The most important thing is we never lay down our arms, we are all in this until the end. ‘Now we have to go to the Bernabeu and we will need our fans like never before and we are going to do something magical, which is win.’ Pep Guardiola urged his team to show character to see the job through. ‘Maybe we have to raise our level,’ he said. ‘The chances we create, we have to convert. ‘I have no complaints about the performance. I’m so proud at how we performed in front of the world against this team. ‘To win this competition, from my small experience, you have to overcome situations. The result could have been better. It’s a good test to show our personality.’ Real manager Carlo Ancelotti said: ‘I think in the second game, if we defend better we’ll win, but if we defend like that we could be out.’
