CATHY Gardner was forced to say her final goodbye to her father through his care home window, as Covid restrictions put in place to protect residents from the virus meant she could not go inside.
Dr Gardner, 60, believes her father Michael Gibson, , was one of thousands of elderly and vulnerable residents exposed to the virus after hospital patients were discharged to care homes without testing or adequate isolation. He died in April 2020, with the cause of death recorded as probable Covid because he could not be tested.
Dr Gardner, a microbiologist from Sidmouth in Devon, who has a PhD in virology, said she was shocked because she had believed care homes were being isolated. ‘We were all being told to stay at home,’ she said. ‘He had not been outside, so how on earth had he caught it?’
