My FIRST car was a Hillman Minx. It was two-tone (red and white) with a front bench seat and column gear change, but it had one major difference — it was a left-hand drive. One night my wife-to-be Jean and I went out for a meal. On the way home we were stopped by the police. I wound down the window and the policeman told me a rear light wasn’t working. He then asked me if I had been drinking. ‘yes, I’ve had a few pints,’ I replied. He looked somewhat taken aback by my nonchalant candour, so I continued: ‘you had better ask Jean as she is driving — but she has only been drinking orange juice.’ The policeman suddenly realised there wasn’t a steering wheel on my side. He gave me a dirty look and told us to carry on with our journey.
