On the buses

-

STAGECOACH is introducing fully automated, selfdriving buses in Scotland.

Though they are supposed to do everything themselves, so won’t come cheap, they will still have on board a driver to monitor things and a ‘bus captain’, aka conductor, to deal with the passengers. Surely the bus can operate safely on its own or it can’t.

If it can, why are two members of staff being paid to simply sit on it? If it can’t and still needs staff, why not just use a bog standard, cheaper bus and let the driver and conductor earn their wages?

Or is the thinking that we better have a driver on board just in case the automated bus malfunctions and tries to drive itself off a bridge.
