Queen in sparkling form after birthday break at Sandringham

- By Rebecca English Royal Editor

THE country air she enjoyed on her birthday break to Norfolk certainly appears to have agreed with her.

Her Majesty was back at work in sparkling form at Windsor Castle yesterday after spending a few days at her Sandringham estate to celebrate her 96th birthday privately.

She wore a flattering blue paisley dress as she undertook an official audience with the president of Switzerland – without the aid of her walking stick. Smiling broadly, she posed for photos with Ignazio Cassis and his wife Paola in her Oak Room. The Queen has experienced mobility issues and a string of other health problems including Covid in recent months, saying the virus had left her ‘very tired and exhausted’. In February, at a Windsor engagement where she used her stick, she pointed to her foot and told guests: ‘As you can see, I can’t move.’

But Buckingham Palace now says she hopes to attend the State Opening of Parliament in less than two weeks’ time.
