Addict’s 20 years for death of son
A DRUG addict who used her son’s inhaler to smoke crack cocaine before he died ‘gasping for air’ from an asthma attack has been jailed for 20 years.
Laura Heath, 40, was convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence last week after jurors heard how her son Hakeem Hussain was found dead in a garden.
Ahead of yesterday’s sentencing at Coventry Crown Court, friend Chloe Cooper, 35, said ‘heads should roll’ over the seven-year-old’s death. ‘The failures... are sickening,’ she said.
Mr Justice Dove told Heath that Hakeem’s death in Nechells, Birmingham, was the result of her ‘catastrophic and deplorable’ parenting. She will serve two thirds of her sentence behind bars.
