Saints face Ward-Prowse fight
SOUTHAMPTON will tell their Premier League rivals that James Ward-Prowse is not for sale as they gear up for a battle to keep their captain this summer. The England midfielder has enjoyed another excellent season at St Mary’s and is a strong candidate to make Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad. His displays have caught the attention of a number of the Saints’ top-flight rivals, including Newcastle and Tottenham. But Southampton are determined to keep their skipper for next season and will not entertain offers. Ward-Prowse, 27, still has four years left on his deal, meaning Southampton are under no pressure to sell, although their stance is unlikely to deter potential bidders. Ward-Prowse might not feel he can pass up the opportunity to join one of the Premier League’s top six clubs this summer, with the chance to play European football being an attractive proposition.
