Captured Briton on Russian TV

-

A BRITISH father-of-four fighting for Ukraine has been captured by Russian forces and paraded on television.

Andrew Hill, from Plymouth, enlisted in Ukraine’s foreign legion earlier this year, answering President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call for veterans to defend his country.

Mr Hill told his Russian interrogators he spent time as a border guard before his commanders suggested he should transfer to a frontline unit. He appeared with his arm in a sling and his head wrapped in bandages, after apparently being wounded in action.

Last night, the Russian defence ministry said he had surrendered in the Mykolaiv region in southern Ukraine. His capture follows the seizure of Britons Aiden Aslin, 28, and Shaun Pinner, 48, in Mariupol earlier this month.

In the Russian TV footage, which appeared to have been heavily edited, a fearful Mr Hill said: ‘I don’t have a rank... I just know the [Ukrainian] foreign legion said I could help. They [the Ukrainians] didn’t pay me. They said they was meant to be paying people. But no one’s been paid.’

Mr Hill said Russian soldiers had treated his wounds. Asked what he would say to other British volunteers thinking of enlisting in Ukraine’s forces, Mr Hill said: ‘That they need to really think about it. This does not involve us.’
