Could this be Nessie making waves again?

Captured by loch-side cottage tourists, a video that defies explanation... and an object surfacing

IT’S a mystery which has captured the imagination of Britons for decades.

Now the hunt for the Loch Ness Monster has taken a new twist – after a video appeared to show a creature up to 30ft long swimming in the water.

Many reported sightings of ‘Nessie’ over the years have been dismissed as wishful thinking.

But experts have hailed the latest video as the most compelling evidence in two decades.

The two-and-a-half minute film

‘What on Earth is that?’

– taken by tourists staying beside the Highlands loch – shows what look like humps breaking the surface and a creature swimming and turning under the waves.

A strong wake of water can be seen behind ‘Nessie’ – just 150 yards from shore.

The legend of the monster dates back to the 6th century AD when Irish monk St Columba is said to have spotted a beast trying to attack a man in the nearby River Ness which fled when he made the sign of the cross.

The first photo supposedly showing Nessie’s head and long neck was taken by an English tourist in 1934 and sparked years of attempts to find the beast.

Gary Campbell, who has spent 26 years logging credible sightings of Nessie, said the new video was the best footage he had seen in decades.

He added: ‘This is a really, really good sighting of something that is unexplained in Loch Ness.’

The footage was taken by a couple of holidaymakers in their early 50s who asked not to be identified. The woman said: ‘We’d definitely love for somebody to analyse the video. If it helps anybody work out what’s down there then it’d be our absolute pleasure. We would be delighted.’

She said she had woken up just after 6am on Monday and decided to take photos of the loch near Inverness. After spotting something large moving in the water, she began filming on her phone and could be heard saying ‘What on Earth is that?’ as her husband joined her to watch what was unfolding. The couple estimated the creature to be 20ft to 30ft long.

However, zoologist Dr Darren Naish, author of Hunting Monsters, cast doubt on the sighting. He warned: ‘We see two tiny black objects, filmed at great distance.

‘Wakes of this sort are common on the loch’s surface when conditions are right.’
