Wigan turn on style to keep pace with old foes

WIGAN WARRIORS delivered a statement performanc­e in the Super League last night with a dominant 44-20 win at WARRINGTON WOLVES. Matt Peet’s side had not tasted victory at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in their last five visits but were immediatel­y in control when Iain Thornley went over twice in the first 10 minutes. Riley Dean had briefly levelled for the hosts but Wigan led 24-10 by half-time after Bevan French and Liam Farrell (below) crossed either side of Matt Ashton’s try. Liam Marshall extended Wigan’s advantage with two tries in as many minutes after the restart before substitute Ethan Harvard got in on the act. Danny Walker and Peter Mata’utia went over in the final 10 minutes for the hosts. Wigan stay second in the table on points difference after late conversion­s from Tommy Makinson earned leaders 14-10 victory over DEVILS. Ben Davies and Jack Welsby’s tries had previously been cancelled out by Morgan Escare and Matthew Costello for the visitors. Mathieu Laguerre’s hat-trick helped CATALANS DRAGONS keep pace with the top two as they picked up their third win in four with a 44-12 thrashing of CASTLEFORD TIGERS, despite a raft of injuries and suspension­s. Julian Bousquet, Mitchell Pearce, Tyrone May, Arthur Mourgue and Matt Whitley were also on target for Steve McNamara’s side, ending the visitors’ five-match winning streak in emphatic style. LEEDS RHINOS halted HULL KR’s run of six wins in a row as Matt Prior and Morgan Gannon crossed in a 12-0 victory.
