All in the name
I FACED the dilemma about whether I should change my name after marriage (Letters).
I wanted to share a surname with my husband, though he wasn’t bothered either way.
However, changing my name in my 40s would be an administrative nightmare because I had accumulated so much paperwork in my maiden name, including legal documents.
I was surprised that our friends and relatives assumed I would be changing my name and sent wedding gifts in the form of cheques written accordingly.
Even in this age of supposed equality, most people seem to take a dim view if you don’t take your husband’s name on marriage unless you are a celebrity.
I decided not to double-barrel, but use my maiden name for work and my married name for everything else, with both on my passport. It works well.
