LEAGUE ONE WEEKEND ROUND-UP

- DAVID KENT

A MATCH full of jeopardy ended with ROTHERHAM securing promotion to the Championship and GILLINGHAM being relegated to League Two. Rotherham boss Paul Warne held his head in his hands in relief after the 2-1 win in Kent confirmed an immediate return to the second tier. ‘Gillingham didn’t make it easy,’ said Warne. ‘We had to be resilient and defend well.’ Fans from both sides invaded the Priestfield pitch and let off flares and smoke bombs. Seats were also broken. Gills manager Neil Harris, who took charge on February 1, will have a summer clearout. ‘I have to apologise to the fans for the fact we have not met the standards expected. The players have not been good enough,’ said Harris. AFC WIMBLEDON and DONCASTER also suffered relegation to the fourth tier. WIGAN sealed promotion to the Championship and won the title with a 3-0 victory at SHREWSBURY, ending their five-match winless run. ‘Football is made up of small inches and small margins. If you work tirelessly every day, you’ll get those small margins and when you need to get over the line this means so much for the supporters,’ said Wigan boss Leam Richardson. PLYMOUTH dropped out of the play-off spots after they were thrashed 5-0 at home by MK DONS, who secured a third-place finish and will face WYCOMBE in the semi-finals.
