Tizzard Jnr gets off to flying start as trainer

- By MARCUS TOWNEND Racing Correspondent

JOE TIZZARD got off the mark as a trainer with his first runner over jumps when Slate House landed the Racing TV Handicap Chase at Kempton yesterday. Tizzard has taken over the licence at his family’s Dorset stable after father Colin stood down at the end of the last jumps season. Former jockey Joe’s first runner as a trainer was unplaced on the Flat at Salisbury on Sunday, but he admitted to get off the mark so quickly was important. Joe, who had taken on increasing responsibility in recent seasons working alongside his father, said: ‘It has been a family business forever but it is certainly special being in my name. It was quite special to see my name as a trainer in the racecard! ‘I’m not going to say I’m a rookie trainer and all that nonsense because I’m taking over a well-established yard, but it is still nice as it is the first one in my name.’ n CHARLIE APPLEBYtrained New London, unbeaten in two races, both staged at Newmarket, will have his Cazoo Derby credentials tested when he lines up in tomorrow’s Chester Vase. The mount of William Buick is the odds-on favourite and faces four rivals, headed by Aidan O’Brien’s Changingoftheguard.
