We’ll do more to ease cost of living, PM vows

- By John Stevens Deputy Political Editor

BORIS Johnson vowed yesterday to do more to ease the cost of living, admitting inflation could hit 10 per cent this year.

The Prime Minister conceded soaring prices were hitting shoppers and that the cost of chicken was ‘crazy’.

Challenged on whether the Government is doing all it can, Mr Johnson admitted: ‘There is more that we can do.’

The PM said it was ‘correct’ that inflation – currently at 7 per cent – could rise further to hit 10 per cent this year.

During the interview on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Susanna Reid challenged him about the case of 77-year-old viewer Elsie, who spends her days on buses to keep energy bills down. Ex-London mayor Mr Johnson replied: ‘The 24-hour freedom bus pass was actually something that I actually introduced.’ Miss Reid hit back: ‘Marvellous, so Elsie should be grateful to you for her bus pass!’

As the robust interview came to an end, the TV host mentioned that Lorraine Kelly’s programme was coming up next on the channel.

A confused Mr Johnson asked: ‘Who’s Lorraine?’ Miss Reid countered: ‘Who’s Lorraine? Lorraine is a legend!’
