Nuclear future

FOLLOWING the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the global rise in demand for oil has meant Britain has needed to rethink its energy policy.

It’s in our interest to move from carbon energy sources, but simply cutting back on consumptio­n is not enough. I am an advocate for renewable energy, but it won’t be able to match all our needs in future.

We need to look to France to provide us with the argument for nuclear power. France receives 70 per cent of its energy from nuclear power. This is because following the oil crisis of 1973, French President Georges Pompidou decided to prioritise this form of energy.

Unlike Germany and Poland, it’s not dependent on Russian gas and oil. That’s why we need to build Sizewell C nuclear power station to ensure our energy security. Dr OLIVER B. STEWARD,
