Britcar racer’s homelift freedom

-

AARON MORGAN has raced in motorsport since his teens — this year securing third place overall in class 4 of the Britcar Endurance championships and moving up to the prestigious British GT Championship.

He’s achieved all this with a disability, while racing alongside able-bodied competitors.

And now a Stiltz homelift has finally given him the same freedom at home that he enjoys on the racing track. Aaron, 30, started motocross aged seven — he always had a selfconfessed ‘need for speed’.

But in 2006, aged 15, he had a life-changing accident on the track, breaking his vertebrae and spinal cord and spending a month in a coma.

He says: ‘Around that time, an occupational therapist told me that because I was now disabled, I would be able to take my driving test a year early!’

Little did that OT realise she had set Aaron on a course that would steer his life in such an exciting direction.

He adds: ‘When I get into the race car, my wheelchair is left in the pit and it’s just me and the car. It feels like I leave my disability behind.’

However, home was a different matter — until he took delivery of a wheelchair-accessible homelift from Stiltz.

Previously he could only get up the stairs if someone else was in the house to help him.

It made him feel as if he was a prisoner in his own home. The home lift has changed all that. ‘I’m far more independent now. I work from home, and can go upstairs when I need to.

‘It’s lovely that I can read my stepson a bedtime story. It feels as if I have the same freedom in my home as I have on the track.’

The installation process went extremely smoothly, he says.

‘Now my mates come in and all want a go in the lift,’ he laughs. ‘The aesthetics are great — it’s really pleasing to the eye which is important to me.’
