Wilder fires warning to failing stars

CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND ROUND-UP

- By MIKE WHALLEY and ADAM SHERGOLD

CHrIS WILDEr will begin a radical squad overhaul at MIDDLESBROUGH today after admitting they need vast improvement to become promotion contenders. Boro’s Championship play-off hopes were wrecked by a late-season slump that culminated in a 4-1 final-day defeat at PRESTON. Wilder has offered a new deal to midfielder Jonny Howson and wants to build a squad around key players Dael Fry, Paddy McNair, Isaiah Jones, riley McGree and Marcus Tavernier. But the Boro boss, who replaced Neil Warnock last November, is ready to show several players the door. Wilder said: ‘It’ll be face-to-face meetings on Monday, no emails, no phone calls. It’ll be man-to-man, face-to-face, thank you very much. And there’ll be stern conversations with the boys who’ll be staying who we need to get more out of.’ HUDDERSFIELD will take on Luton in the play-offs after their 2-0 win over BRISTOL CITY saw them finish third. They have won six of their last seven games as they enter the play-offs in fine form. Promoted BOURNEMOUTH ended MILLWALL’S slim play-off hopes with a 1-0 win on the south coast. Kieffer Moore, who scored the goal against Nottingham Forest that took Bournemouth up on Tuesday, was their match-winner again.
