Don’t bother the GP

-

I SYMPATHISE with the put-upon GP receptionist (Letters).

They are the interface between medics and patients and simply follow their job description.

Crucially, they are the gateway to access, so politeness and consideration of their needs is essential.

What did surprise me is that they can’t refuse appointments, even to obvious malingerers.

GPs are not there for minor ailments. The fact the NHS is free at the point of access is a real problem. I suggest an appointment fee, payable in advance, and large enough to make a trip to the pharmacy less costly than wasting the GP’s time.
