Betting I could make lolly with my brolly

- Alan Berwick, Northampton.

AFEW years ago I had a bookmaker’s account with William Hill online. I received a winning credit in my account for £360 for a rugby bet I had no knowledge of. I contacted customer services at their head office to explain what had happened. Their representative stated that it had been paid to me by mistake. I asked if I could have a small reward, and he asked what I had in mind. ‘I would like one of the blue William Hill umbrellas that they use on TV reporting,’ I said. This was duly sent to me and I visited our local racecourse at Towcester with it. Halfway through the races, it started to drizzle, so I put up my umbrella. Within a few minutes, several people had approached me to place bets and I had to explain I was a punter and not a bookie!
