Keir failed to give Boris bloody nose

-

THE local elections were a bad day at the office for Boris Johnson, but even worse for sir Keir starmer. If Labour can’t achieve a landslide against a Government struggling to sort out Brexit, recover from a pandemic, in the depths of a cost of living crisis, with migrants crossing the Channel, increasing fuel costs and a war in Europe, then they never will.

CHRIS TAYLOR, Yateley, Hants. LABOUR didn’t bother to stand in my ward. A cynical person might assume they have nothing to offer my village.

KEITH BIRD, Nazeing, Essex. HOW come Boris was allowed to take Dilyn into the polling station when I had to leave my dog outside?

SUSAN HARLEY, London SW15. INTEREsTING that the police waited until the local elections were over before announcing the investigation into Beergate.

SUSAN SMITH, address supplied. LOCAL elections should be fought on local issues with the best person elected for the job, not along party lines. When it comes to national politics, no other leader, least of all sir Keir starmer, has any ideas, plans or the wit to find an alternative, so please don’t think he will suddenly find you cheap food, oil and gas. Boris may not be perfect, but he’s the best choice we have.

IAN FULLER, Harrogate, N. Yorks. IF PARTYGATE and Beergate are the reasons why some politicians have not done as well in the local elections as they might have expected, then it simply underlines the fact that the ‘do as I say, not as I do’ mantra is not the right attitude to have if you want public support

MICHAEL FROST, Romford, Essex. LOCAL elections are normally a problem for the Government. Add in fuel prices, inflation, Covid and the furore about Partygate and Labour should have made massive gains. As they didn’t, it shows voters do not find them believable, desirable or relevant to their lives.

J. GUTTERIDGE, Reading, Berks. REMEMBER Mrs Thatcher had bad local election results and then went on to win General Elections.

D. HARTLEY, Solihull, W. Mids. AFTER losing 500 Tory councillors, it would have been expected that the Prime Minister would have been out the next day trying to rally the troops. But instead he went to a nursery to paint pictures. At least the children didn’t ask awkward questions. Perhaps the expected changes in the Cabinet should start at the top.

BRIAN BEST, High Wycombe, Bucks. IF I WERE Boris, I wouldn’t worry too much about the local election results. People vote with their hearts when they know the candidates. In a General Election, they vote with their heads.

MARGARET NODEN, Orihuela, Spain. WHY are council elections fought along national political party lines? At local level, we want people from the area with the drive, energy and vision to deliver solutions to issues while achieving financial efficiency. We don’t want a re-run of a General Election where local issues are swept under the party political carpet.

IAN DARKE, Sale, Gtr Manchester.
